Asbestos is an umbrella term to cover a group of six fibrous materials. These can be broken up into two groups: amphibole and serpentine. Amphibole refers to a group of dark-colored silicate minerals that is typically composed of iron and magnesium ions. The serpentine group refers to an olive green colored group of silicate minerals that are primarily composed of iron and magnesium but that may also contain small amounts of nickel, chromium and cobalt.
