Johnson & Johnson Under Criminal Investigation

Johnson & Johnson is the world’s largest health care empire. Over the years, “America’s most admired lawbreaker” has earned a reputation for price gouging the market, contributing to the opioid epidemic, buying politicians, profiting from highly-addictive drugs, and knowingly selling dangerous and defective products to the public.

There are currently 14,200 active lawsuits alleging that Johnson & Johnson’s talc-based products – including its baby powder – are contaminated by asbestos fibers, a known carcinogen that can lead to the development of peritoneal mesothelioma, ovarian cancer, and other fatal conditions.  Most of the plaintiffs are women who have developed cancer after using Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder for decades.

Although Johnson & Johnson has a history of lawsuits, criminal charges, and scandals, the public was still shocked to learn that the pharmaceutical company knew about the carcinogenic properties of its products and intentionally hid the truth from consumers. Last year, Reuters completed an investigation that revealed “J&J didn’t tell the FDA that at least three tests by three different labs from 1972 to 1975 had found asbestos in its talc – and in one case at levels reported as ‘rather high.’”

In February, the U.S. Justice Department launched a criminal probe into whether Johnson & Johnson lied to the public about the dangers of its talc-based products. The company disclosed that it had been subpoenaed during its annual report to investors and the Securities and Exchange Commission. However, news of the criminal investigation didn’t reach the public until mid-July of 2019.

Unfortunately, this criminal investigation could take years to resolve and may delay pending civil claims. That said, it is likely that the investigation will unearth new evidence, facts, and testimonies that could benefit future plaintiffs.
