What Are the Chances of Mesothelioma Remission?

an elderly man looking worriedRemission refers to when the symptoms of cancer are reduced. Remission can be partial or complete. Complete remission, however, does not mean the cancer is cured. Rather, it means that all signs of the cancer have disappeared for the time being while some cancer cells are still present in the body.

The chances of remission vary depending on several factors, including the type and stage of the cancer, the patient’s age and overall health, and more. Below, we discuss the chances of remission for mesothelioma.

Will My Mesothelioma Go into Remission?

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that affects the outside of the lungs. It differs from lung cancer in that lung cancer affects the inside of the lungs rather than the outside. As such, they are two separate diseases that require different treatments.

For mesothelioma, in particular, complete remission is rare and not fully understood. However, it is possible. Typically, complete remission with mesothelioma occurs when the patient receives an early diagnosis and an aggressive treatment approach.

Otherwise, the 5-year survival rate for mesothelioma is as follows:

  • Localized mesothelioma: 20%

  • Regional mesothelioma: 12%

  • Distant mesothelioma: 8%

These numbers mean that a mesothelioma patient who has either localized, regional, or distant cancer has a certain percent chance of living five years after diagnosis when compared to someone from the general population.

If your mesothelioma does go into remission, you will still not be considered “cured” by your doctor. As such, your health will need to be monitored regularly to ensure that signs of your cancer have not returned.
