What is the Most Effective Way to Fight Mesothelioma?

an elderly man smilingMesothelioma has several treatments. The type of treatment you receive will depend on your cancer’s stage, your age, your overall health, and more.

Below, we discuss the three main ways to fight mesothelioma and which one may be the most effective for you.

#1. Surgery

Surgery is arguably the most effective treatment for early-stage mesothelioma. This is because it’s one of the only ways to completely remove, and thereby cure, the cancer.

Such surgery is only an option when the cancer is in the very early stages and has not yet spread to other parts of the body (localized).

Otherwise, in later-stage cancer, this treatment option is only effective to improve or manage a patient’s symptoms.

#2. Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is effective for those who are healthy enough to undergo this form of treatment. This is because chemotherapy can be too aggressive of treatment for those whose bodies cannot handle it. Chemotherapy works by injecting drugs intravenously that may hinder or stop the cancer cells’ rapid division. The negative side effects of chemotherapy may include:

  • Fatigue

  • Appetite changes

  • Mouth, tongue, and throat problems that cause sores and pain when swallowing

  • Urine and bladder changes and kidney problems

  • Changes in libido and sexual function

  • Fertility problems

  • Anemia

#3. Radiation

Radiation is often given in conjunction with surgery and chemotherapy. However, it may be prescribed as the sole treatment for patients who are not strong enough for chemotherapy.

Radiation is most effective when the patient is in poor health, or when the cancer is in such a late stage that palliative care is the better route to take.
